How Counselors Should Deal With Work-Related Stress

Christian counselors listen to the problems of their clients almost everyday and while their clients were unable to unload their burdens, most of it goes to the Christian counselor. In fact, by the end of the day, Christian counselors feel so worn out because they have been listening to problems all day and this is the reason why there are times when Christian counselors feel emotionally drained for having listened to the problems of their clients all the time. After all, Christian counselors are also human too and they are not exempted to feel anxiety and despair most of the time.

Christian counselors are similar with other people. They feel pain, they feel negative emotions too but what sets them apart from other people is that they have the capacity to manage their work-related stress and compartmentalize their personal lives from their careers. For Christian counselors, dealing with stress is a matter of finding ways on how to boost their positive energy.

One of the best ways for Christian counselors to be able to manage their stress is to take care of their bodies. It is important for Christian counselors to live healthy lifestyle. Doing sports activities can greatly help reduce the negative emotions that have been building up. The problem with listening too much about other people’s problems and not living a healthy lifestyle is that it will easily lead to sickness and other diseases. The body is the temple of Christ and it is important to take care of it.

On the other hand, it is also very crucial for Christian counselors to be able to unload their anxieties to other people as well. For this reason, it is crucial for Christian counselors to derive support from their peers. That way, they will be able to affirm their emotions and solve personal disputes that may arise from their work. It will also help for Christian counselors to join stress management retreats in order to help those who are burned out all the time. This is also the best opportunity for Christian counselors to meet other Christian counselors who have the same experiences as them.

Lastly, the best way to seek solace after being burned out at work is for Christian counselors to seek the wisdom from the Bible. The Bible teaches Christian counselors to drop all worries. In Philippians 4:6 (NIV), the verse writes “Do not be anxious [do not worry] about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Moreover, in Matthew 6:25-34 (NIV), Jesus assures us that our heavenly Father will take care of all our needs so worry and anxiety is uncalled for. All there is to it is to pray to God for enlightenment and guidance despite all worries and anxieties.

Life is too short for Christian counselors to worry and this is the reason why it is crucial for them to be able to manage their stress at all costs in order for them to be able to effectively carry out their jobs to their clients.
